Honoré Mercier hopes to change Quebec's future and stands for election. Father Labelle dreams of a railway line to the north, a symbol of hope for the parishioners. Donalda would like to see Alexis set up on her land. Séraphin becomes a wood merchant, benefiting from other people's misfortunes.

Évangéliste falls ill and Séraphin tries to change the will in his favour. He also stands for the municipal elections. New colonists arrive and the Malterre hotel risks changing owners. Now an orphan, Siffleux learns that he's been adopted. A fight gets out of hand and ends in death.

With Évangéliste's death looking suspicious, Séraphin tells Délima to leave the family home. The villagers are intrigued by a new arrival in Sainte-Adèle. Who is he really? Alexis is in prison awaiting his trial. Donalda convinces Jérôme to help her prove his innocence. What has she offered him in exchange?

Though only just married, Séraphin continues his scheming and his thirst for power seems boundless. Furious at having lost Donalda, Alexis seeks a way to keep Siffleux with him. While opposition grows to Séraphin´s austerity plans, he tries to force Alexis to leave the village by buying Anthime´s forge. Labelle is threatened by Ward, the manager of American Paper, who turns up at the hotel with armed men. Donalda is hesitant to admit that she is pregnant by Alexis.

Rosa-Rose has also been a victim of the thief. Séraphin appoints Bidou as royal detective, in order to find the culprit. Father Caron profits from Délima's distress to have a regulation voted that makes alcohol illegal in Sainte-Adèle. Alexis proposes a strategy to compel the population to be vaccinated.

Father Caron and the people of Sainte-Adèle take up pitchforks and sticks and launch a revolt against Séraphin to reclaim his water. Florent and Pit arrive at the town council to reveal an important piece of information concerning the drought. Séraphin's vast financial scheme is in danger of collapsing...
