On the streets of Paris Rodolphe de Gerolstein meets Chourineur, big-hearted but always ready for a fight, and Fleur de Marie, an orphan who has become a prostitute. They have a drink together in the Auberge du Lapin-Blanc and recount their lives. Rodolphe is in search of a certain Germain.
