Born in Haiti, before dying tragically in 1962 at the age of only 39, Jacques Stephen Alexis was a major writer of Caribbean and Haitian literature. His fervent humanism, his fight against fascism and his stance in the social and anti-colonial debate of his time made his an essential voice that remains timeless even today. His works are taught around the world and translated into some twenty languages.
