Été 1939. Ernest, 10 ans, et Colette, 6 ans, quittent Paris pour un week-end chez leurs grands-parents. Mais très vite, la guerre est déclarée : ils restent à l'abri loin de la capitale, en Normandie. Leur père est appelé au front tandis que leur mère tombe malade.

Octobre 1939. Ernest et Colette s'acclimatent à la vie en Normandie. À l'école ils se font des amis comme des ennemis, les Morteau en numéro un. C'est l'époque de la « drôle de guerre » : cette période sans combat où les rumeurs vont bon train.

Juin 1940. L'armée allemande a envahi la Belgique. Il faut fuir : c'est l'exode. Ernest et Colette tentent de fuir avec leurs grands-parents mais la route est semée d'embûches et ils s'inquiètent énormément pour leurs parents.

Le secret
Juillet 1940. Le village est occupé. Les maisons sont envahies par les soldats allemands et Ernest et Colette doivent cohabiter avec eux à la ferme. Heureusement, ils retrouvent vite leurs grands-parents de qui ils avaient été séparés.

Mai 1941. L'hiver sous l'Occupation a été rude, car la nourriture est rationnée. Ernest et Colette sont soulagés : ils ont reçu une lettre de leur père ! Celui-ci est bien vivant, bien que prisonnier en Allemagne.
