L'équipe s'est divisée en deux cordées pour tenir compte des avis et préférences de chacun. En cinq jours, ils veulent gravir deux sommets différents : le Xuelian nord pour les uns, le Xuelian ouest pour les autres. C'est parti pour une ascension qui les poussera tous à leurs limites.

Changement de plan
Le mauvais temps met un frein à l'expédition. Le précieux bulletin météorologique arrive de Suisse avec un important décalage. Lorsqu'une amélioration s'annonce, l'équipe peut enfin commencer à préparer l'ascension finale, celle du Xuelian Feng. Mais les avis divergent sur la voie à emprunter.

Première ascension d'acclimatation : le Deadman's Peak à 5 400 mètres. Malgré les avertissements de Roman Hari, le médecin de montagne de l'expédition, les garçons veulent aller trop haut, trop vite, et ils remarquent quels effets l'altitude peut avoir.

Au pied du Xuelian Feng
L'équipe a deux jours de marche pour rallier le camp de base à 3 500 mètres d'altitude. Les alpinistes sont accompagnés d'une demi-douzaine de cavaliers ouïgours et vingt-deux chevaux lourdement chargés. À leur arrivée, le temps change brusquement et le sommet du Xuelian Feng disparaît...
