A former soldier, Dheepan leaves Sri Lanka, where the civil war is coming to an end. On the run, he meets a woman and her daughter, whom he presents as his own to French customs in order to obtain a visa more easily. Living on a precarious housing estate, barely knowing each other, they try to rebuild their lives.
