Jan, a provocative artist with varying degrees of success, finds himself on the brink of the precipice with his daughter Marie, an occasional stripper. In a fictional South American country in 1907, after the death of her father, an Irish terrorist, Maria joins a travelling music-hall show which offers her a place as a Parisian duettist. Her partner has the same first name as her. Together, they find themselves embroiled in a peasants' revolt.
Paris, 1963. It's back to school for 13-year-old Anne and her sister Frédérique, who is 15. In their all-girls secondary school, the teaching method remains very strict. In spite of the rules, Frédérique is interested in boys and politics. Anne, for the moment, lives in her sister's shadow.
